- Disability Support Worker
Students will learn how to work and support people with a disability in a range of environments.
Description
You will dive deep into the legal and ethical frameworks governing the sector, including the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and duty of care guidelines. The content bridges theory and practice by teaching you how to facilitate client empowerment, choice, and dignity of risk while delivering day-to-day tailored support that aligns with an individual’s unique care plan. Central to this is learning effective verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support clients with diverse needs and collaborate within healthcare teams. Finally, you will master the vital safety skills required to protect both yourself and your clients, covering infection control, hazard identification, and safe manual handling techniques.

There are no pre-requisite requirements to this course.
Students are recommended to be working or be open to placement. Students are typically over the age of 18 years old seeking to gain entry inot Individual Support – Disability.
Students must have suitable language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills to read and comprehend learning materials and perform tasks.

Students will be required to complete their theory modules and upload their practical workplace evidence through their individual student portal or physically attend our approved practical placement locations.
Students are required to have a device with internet connection with a minimum of 8GB of RAM, microphone, video and speakers.
Participants are welcome to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT) prior to enrolment. Refer to the student handbook for further information on the application process.
Working in direct client care is physically demanding. To successfully complete the practical assessments and mandatory work placement component, you must be able to demonstrate the following physical capabilities:
Manual Handling & Lifting: The strength and agility to safely assist clients with transfers (e.g., from a bed to a wheelchair, or assisting someone to stand) using mechanical hoists, slide sheets, and slide boards.
Mobility & Stamina: The ability to remain on your feet for extended periods (often an entire 8-hour shift), walking, bending, reaching, and kneeling to assist with domestic tasks or personal care.
Fine Motor Skills & Coordination: The dexterity required to assist with personal hygiene, open medication packaging (under supervision), prep meals, and accurately use digital devices or paper forms for logging progress notes.
Sensory Awareness: Adequate visual and auditory acuity to actively monitor a client’s well-being, read small print on care plans, and immediately notice changes in a client's physical state or environmental hazards.
